Sometimes a Christian Scientist may become discouraged if he or she is making little headway as a healer. The lack of progress may be hard to understand.
If our prayers seem lacking in healing power, we can earnestly ask the Father to show us the reason. Christian Science is the truth, and God will show us the way to demonstrate it.
Often it's not the words of our prayers that need changing but the spirit behind them. Are our prayers perfunctory? Are we putting our trust in mere words? In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy explains, "Students of Christian Science, who start with its letter and think to succeed without the spirit, will either make shipwreck of their faith or be turned sadly awry." Science and Health, p. 451; If our faith in the power of Christian Science to heal is drifting toward the shoals of doubt and despair, we may need to gain more of the spirit of Science.
