After World War II, when there was hardly anything left to eat, I read an article from a Christian Science periodical on the subject of safety. It told how a woman called out, when faced with destructive forces, that God would have to be destroyed first. It became clear to me that we could not starve. God would have to lack first for His image to lack any good. We could not be destroyed by hunger as God provides all good. Great peace came over me. Shortly after that, through the intervention of a dear church member, I found employment, and a little later the first parcels from The Mother Church in Boston arrived.
At one time, when I was faced with a very unpleasant fellow worker with whom nobody wanted to work, the answer to my prayer was always the same: "You have to love her." However, since I thought that she would stay with us for good—a prospect I didn't like very much—I always said, "I just can't love her." And I continued to suffer. One day, when I had reached the end of my rope and after she had left the room for lunch, I saw that mortal will has no power to confuse or distract me so that I cannot perceive the truth clearly. I fervently prayed for clarity, and again the answer came, "Love her." This time I said, "Yes, Father, I will love her the way You love her." The next day the problem was solved to everyone's satisfaction.
After I had taken up the study of this Science, the numbness from the freezing of my little finger, a numbness which had recurred for many years, just faded away. A small, painful growth on the sole of my foot was removed by prayer. Also, a painful facial inflammation was healed through the faithful prayer of a Christian Science practitioner. No scars were left.
