Denial and affirmation

From the February 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

You see, Christ Jesus knew.
He could see
when others trembled
in the darkness.

What he saw
with spiritual insight
was the man who is God's image.
Right there, where human eyes
bore witness to deformity
of limb or character—
disease or sin,
or death itself.

He saw... the truth,
and with his feet widespread
upon that Rock
he viewed the limiting,
the sickening, the degrading, all
as bald presumptuous falsehood.

What eyes saw, he denied.
He spoke commandingly, aloud,
or thundered silently, within...
No!
He saw, instead,
the man whose being echoes God,
and seeing, he insisted:
YES!

And seeming
ceased to seem,
and being
could be seen.
