Scientific mental healing versus mental quackery

From the February 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is sometimes argued that one who is relying exclusively on Christian Science for healing is not doing all he can for himself and that he should enlist the additional aid of material medicine. After all, it is argued, God made medicine and works through those who practice medicine and surgery.

Christian Scientists appreciate the sincerity and humanity of all who are trying to relieve the suffering of mankind. But they are convinced, through their study of the Scriptures in the light of Christian Science, that God, Spirit, works only spiritually, and that one will not be doing what he can for himself until he does rely wholly and exclusively on Spirit for healing, on the one infinite, divine Mind.

Science shows that disease is not what it appears to be to the corporeal sense, that it is not an actual, self-constituted, bodily condition to be physically diagnosed and got rid of, but the externalization of a mental image. Therefore disease is actually healed only by casting out the thought, or false sense, that induced it. And this can be done only by an understanding of Truth.
