One time when my husband and I were having a business problem, a friend urged us to talk with a Christian Science practitioner. Our friend had sent us several religious articles from The Christian Science Monitor. To satisfy him, we made an appointment with a practitioner.
I had read some Christian Science literature that used the word "treatment," and during the visit I wondered aloud what that meant. The practitioner asked if I wanted treatment, and after gaining my consent, she prayed for me on the spot. I was asked to read the Lord's Prayer, with its spiritual interpretation given by Mary Baker Eddy in Science and Health (pp. 16-17). My husband was requested to read this passage from the Bible (Isa. 41:10): "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." This remarkable woman, a descendant of African slaves, prayed silently, and our visit was over in less than an hour.
A few days later I realized that a lump on my breast, for which I had received unsuccessful medical treatment, had disappeared.
