When I became pregnant, my desire...

From the May 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I became pregnant, my desire was to have childbirth without the use of medication. I went to a physician who cooperates with Christian Scientists in such deliveries. He also knew the Christian Science practitioner who had agreed to support me through prayer. Following a routine physical examination, the doctor spoke with me personally and telephoned the practitioner. He told us that I was diabetic and that considering all the factors involved, the pregnancy should be terminated immediately. He pointed out that if this was not done, throughout the pregnancy constant medication and treatment would be needed, and even then, there would be a large possibility of having a stillborn child.

I listened in disbelief, then talked with the practitioner by phone. Together we decided to work this out through prayer. The physician had cautioned us that should we not achieve a complete healing in a few days, abortion should be strongly considered. He also stated that because of the diabetes he would not be able to care for me as his other expectant patients, but rather he would refer me to a clinic that specialized in such cases.

As I drove the seventy-five-mile journey home, I kept recalling "the scientific statement of being" in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It begins (p. 468): "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." In the light of this statement it was absurd to believe the verdict of disease and limitation. In reality there is nothing going on but God's government of His spiritual ideas, which includes my true identity as His offspring.
