Individual freedom and collective harmony

From the July 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We live in a spiritual universe that teems with manifestations of God's being, the representatives of His sublime nature. The spiritual fact is that God, the one creator of all, is infinite, divine Mind, and the one true creation is Mind's infinite expression. In this spiritual universe every individual idea is complete in itself, dependent only on God, who creates it. But all are necessary to their creator as evidence of His infinite capacity and abundant productivity. God cherishes every one of the ideas that He creates, and His law ensures that all exist in perfect harmony. As Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health, "The universe of Spirit is peopled with spiritual beings, and its government is divine Science." Science and Health, pp. 264-265;

This is the truth of being, the spiritual basis for the scientific healing of all discord between individuals, nations, continents, and the phenomena of the cosmos. And when it is held to, this truth opens the door to greater vision of what life truly is, and the satisfaction that is within reach of us all. Farther on Mrs. Eddy continues, "This scientific sense of being, forsaking matter for Spirit, by no means suggests man's absorption into Deity and the loss of his identity, but confers upon man enlarged individuality, a wider sphere of thought and action, a more expansive love, a higher and more permanent peace." ibid., p. 265;

This promise of an ideal universe peopled with individuals who have space and opportunity to develop their own infinite possibilities as representatives of infinite Mind—independent of each other yet living in harmony—is being worked out by humanity here and now. We can contribute to universal individual independence and to collective harmony by proving in our own lives that the divine promise of both is a present possibility. But we cannot do this selfishly. Our love must expand to include all mankind and be spiritual enough to enable us to see all as God's offspring, each one dependent only on Him but happily living together with all others under the government of divine Science.
