Am I ready to give mental treatment if someone asks me for it? a Christian Scientist may wonder. Anyone who is spiritually convinced of God's allness, who is sincere in his study of this Science and obedient to its teachings, and who is living Christian qualities to the best of his ability is capable of helping if someone requests Christian Science treatment.
But just how should one go about giving treatment? God, divine Mind, shows us how, and every case is individual. We may find, however, that our approach is strengthened by adherence to the Golden Rule. If you are called on to pray for another, obedience to the spirit of this rule can be a gracious, dependable guide in framing your treatment. You could ask yourself something like this: "If I were the one requesting Christian Science treatment, how would I want to be prayed for under similar circumstances?"
Wouldn't you want your helper to pray for the overcoming of fear? Jesus always calmed the fears of those who came to him for healing. He didn't go about this in just the same way each time, but it's clear as we study his healings that he always addressed the situation in such a way as to move human thought from fear to expectancy of good. He never looked at a troublesome situation as a fixed fact. He knew too much of God's love for man to let any evil suggestion masquerade as reality—that is, a divinely established fact. He proved that the only God-ordered fact of man's being is that God created man to represent His own infinite harmony and perfection.
