The Lion and the Lamb

From the July 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In that beautiful countryside known as the English Lake District there is a curious natural rock formation overlooking the Vale of Grasmere. It is known as the Lion and the Lamb. A lion is seated on the summit and in front of him the figure of a lamb. The lion appears to be guarding the lamb, and the ensemble gives a feel of serenity and security. What a remarkable combination, the strength and fearlessness of the lion blending with the innocence and inoffensiveness of the lamb!

One day when Christ Jesus approached him, John the Baptist exclaimed, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." John 1:29; The Lamb of God—that unblemished purity of the Christ, innocent of all evil and cognizant of all good, which is able to cleanse our world of its sins and afflictions! Mrs. Eddy gives the metaphysical definition of the Bible phrase "Lamb of God" as "the spiritual idea of Love; self-immolation; innocence and purity; sacrifice." Science and Health, p. 590;

Another John, this time the Revelator, speaks of the worthiness of the Lamb to open the sealed book of God, and in the same chapter of "the Lion of the tribe of Juda," which has "prevailed" to open it.See Rev. 5; Here we are shown the gentleness, innocence, and purity of the Lamb to be in harmony with the strength, courage, and fearlessness of the Lion. The beauty and tenderness of divine Love are also the might of Principle. The peace and bliss of Soul are also the power and omniaction of Spirit.
