Since I began studying Christian Science several years ago, the Christ has transformed my life. My consciousness has become less self-centered and more God-centered. Before I found this Science I was extremely nervous and constantly depressed. I felt my life was controlled by situations and people "out there" who seemed to exercise some kind of power over my happiness and well-being. In addition to these problems, my young son was suffering from an arthritic condition and hyperactivity.
In the midst of this loneliness and doubt a friend suggested that I might find some help by reading literature in a Christian Science Reading Room. The next day I visited a Reading Room and bought every children's book that was available.
As I read these simple stories to my son, the power of Truth touched my own heart in a way I had never known. I began to see that it was actually possible to feel God's love here and now, and that God is a present reality—not a theory or creed about which scholars sermonize or philosophize. I felt a kinship with Mary Baker Eddy's words (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 351): "The author became a member of the orthodox Congregational Church in early years. Later she learned that her own prayers failed to heal her as did the prayers of her devout parents and the church; but when the spiritual sense of the creed was discerned in the Science of Christianity, this spiritual sense was a present help. It was the living, palpitating presence of Christ, Truth, which healed the sick." Because of this new feeling I decided to contact a Christian Science practitioner.
