Thanks to help from teachers in the Christian Science Sunday School and my mother's spiritual alertness, my childhood was relatively free from sickness. Occasionally, however, small boils erupted on my face and neck. Since they were not painful and did not keep me from playing, I ignored them. But one day in college a classmate saw my cheek and said, "You're getting a boil. You'll have to have a doctor lance it." I assured her that wouldn't be necessary. But I didn't take time to pray for myself.
The next day my face was badly swollen, and I could not go to school. After breakfast I carefully studied the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly, applying every statement to my need for healing. Then, after further reading in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I prepared school lessons for the next day. When the other members of my family came home for lunch, no one commented on my appearance. The next morning only a small spot remained, and this soon disappeared. This healing proved permanent, for not only has there been no recurrence of the boils, but the scars from childhood boils disappeared also.
After I had taught algebra and Latin for fifteen years, I was given classes to teach in remedial arithmetic. This became burdensome, and a distressing nervous problem developed. Although I enjoyed teaching, I left the profession. I decided to get a job in an accounting office and took several courses in a business school. Later a prospective employer told me I didn't belong in an accounting office, that aircraft companies were looking for people with my mathematical background. He phoned a major company and learned their hiring procedure. After two interviews I was hired into the aerodynamics department of an aircraft company, where I remained for twenty-five years, until mandatory retirement age. During this time, by relying on the intelligence of the divine Mind, I enjoyed the challenges of many interesting problems and attained an engineer's rating. Also, the nervous condition disappeared after persistent prayer by a practitioner.
