Being specific in treatment

From the April 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Immediate healing of another or ourselves often comes about through a deep feeling of God's unchangeable goodness and of man's eternal experiencing of goodness. But in the event that we momentarily lack this feeling, and healing does not take place, prayerful Christian Science treatment lifts us to that higher spiritual altitude, which does heal.

Treatment, involving mental argument, implies specificity: the intelligent, insightful approach tailored to a discord's particular claims in order to annul them. Out of careful, meticulous study of Christian Science, experience in applying it—and above all, inspiration—comes the ability to zero in with relevant affirmations of truth and denials of error in treatment. The very term "Christian Science" implies the understanding and utilization of clear, immutable laws applied to healing. Science provides its student not just with general illumination and broad spiritual and metaphysical generalities. Fundamental in Christian Science is the comprehension of God. And our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in the following is remarkably specific, thorough, succinct: "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love."Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 465

A precise understanding of Christian Science—a clear grasp of its fundamental truths—helps treatment be more direct, more in line with the straight laser beam of Truth, bringing healing light wherever it is most needed. Such accurate understanding helps give treatment the standard of specificity so evident in Mrs. Eddy's statement on the nature of God. Intelligently targeted treatment, backed up by inspiration and a life conforming to divine Life, overrides the leading arguments of the senses testifying to the presence of some particular disease. The specific truths constituting treatment spring from universal Truth and its laws, which are thoroughly evident in the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy.
