Healing by obeying the first commandment

From the April 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We can learn something about obedience from the mathematician. To him, strict obedience to the laws of mathematics means the correct solution to his problem. If he is faced with solving a difficult equation, he doesn't worry too much about the end result. He knows if he works step by step, precisely obeying the rule for each calculation, the answer will be correct. Confidence and success can be his through obedience.

And so it is with obeying God's law. If His law is applied in precise obedience, the answer will be healing, protection, abundant good—the inevitable results of divine law. This law of God is in operation now, whether we know it or not. It seems absent only when we fail to apply it, or when we misapprehend it. So if health and harmony haven't come, perhaps we need to understand better how to obey God's law.

The most important aspect of God's law is stated in the first commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." Ex. 20:3 If the healing power of divine law is to be attained, we must understand what this commandment means and learn how to obey it in daily practice.
