The individual and a healing church

From the April 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Do you think of your church as just a building on a street in your hometown?

Christ Jesus recognized the spiritual nature of Church. To the Samaritan woman he said: "Believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. . . . But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth."John 4:21, 23

Jesus knew that true worship is expressed, not through material objects or buildings, but through a deepening understanding of God, through uplifted living and healing. He was convinced of man's spirituality emanating from God. Convinced that the purpose of his own Christ nature was to bless—that the Christ he demonstrated was inextricably linked with healing. Look how he responded to the disciples whom John the Baptist sent to him to determine if he was indeed the Christ. Jesus replied, "Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them."Matt. 11:4, 5 It was on this foundation that the Master established his church.
