Christ halts the currents of world belief

From the December 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In viewing the world scene, one becomes increasingly aware of certain currents that seem to begin in one country and spread to others. One nation has economic troubles, and because of trade relationships its partners begin to have difficulties, too. Sometimes these currents appear to take on a life of their own and threaten to lead to war, recession, and other devastations.

If we accept them as real forces, we end up with a precarious existence in which today's prosperity may ebb to tomorrow's despair. If we recognize, however, that contrary to popular predictions, the effects of these currents are not inevitable or unavoidable, we can begin to turn the tide in our own lives while also helping the world. Knowing that the only genuine forces anywhere are those in accord with the law of God, good, we can anchor our lives on a completely different basis. Christian Science shows us how this approach gives us dominion over what may seem to be evil and unstoppable forces.

Christ Jesus proved that the law of God is able to annihilate belief in the continuation of such currents. Not long before his crucifixion he told his disciples, "Ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy." He assured them of the permanency of this joy after sorrow when he said, "Your joy no man taketh from you."John 16:20, 22.
