Assertiveness and intimidation outdone

From the December 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The assertive push. The intimidated pull back. Is there a better way?

Individuals who express strong, Godlike qualities are needed. Do such positive qualities originate within the will of the individual? Or do they come from God? God makes and empowers man, giving him all abilities and qualities. So when we need strength or originality, for example, we can know that man is already in active possession of these qualities as God's reflection. Then our human actions can model the divine—we can actively express what God gives man as his birthright.

Mrs. Eddy has given a prayer to all Christian Scientists to ponder each day. It reads: "'Thy kingdom come;' let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them!"Manual of The Mother Church, Art. VIII, Sect. 4. Just imagine a prayer that went something like this: "'Thy kingdom come'; let me assert my desires, my ambitions, my demands for my well-being!" In true prayer, what are we praying for? For God's government to reign in us. For truth, life, and love to be expressed through us, proving we are in fact reflections of divine Truth, Life, and Love.
