Prayer that enriches

From the December 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Prayer is communion with God, and who does not yearn to commune with God more effectively? Our entire experience is determined by the quality of our communion with God.

Christian Science teaches that because God is totally good and knows only good, our need in prayer is not to tell Him of our problems but to know ourselves as He already knows us. Effective prayer involves changing our erroneous concepts, not pleading with God to change anything in His already perfect creation.

Suppose, for example, we are in financial trouble. How do we effectively pray to change our belief in lack? In this instance, communion with God involves gaining more understanding of God as the eternal source of abundance. A mortal sense of lack certainly cannot have an origin in God's allness! Our need is to understand His spiritual abundance and our oneness with His ever-present good.
