While reading a recent issue of The Christian Science Monitor, I was struck by several things: none of the material— news, features, commentary, editorials, cartoon, letters from readers—alarmed me; but it did remind me of how badly the world needs Christ's healing power on a moment-by-moment basis. Here was clear, honest reporting done with a constructive outlook and a deep Christian motive. I asked myself, as I have in the past, What can I do now to help the world? How can I help a world so badly in need of God's compassionate government?
The ideas came quite suddenly. I thought of this passage from Miscellaneous Writings by Mrs. Eddy: "Three times a day, I retire to seek the divine blessing on the sick and sorrowing, with my face toward the Jerusalem of Love and Truth, in silent prayer to the Father which 'seeth in secret,' and with childlike confidence that He will reward 'openly.'" Mis., p. 133.
"With childlike confidence . . ."! Nothing intellectually complicated or ideologically tainted here. Then another passage by Mrs. Eddy came to thought: "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." Science and Health, p. 1. Again, how clear. I saw that in claiming this spiritual understanding and unselfed love, we can help others through prayer. In fact, those very qualities constitute prayer. The Christ-power, which is the solution to all the world's ills, enters the human arena through such prayer.
