A career in the U.S. Foreign Service

From a mountain town into a wider world

From the November 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!" Isa. 52:7.

Growing up in a small town in the Rocky Mountains before World War II, I waited eagerly each day for our issue of The Christian Science Monitor to arrive. There would always be something in it to feed the human and spiritual hunger of the whole family. For me, it might be a valuable background article to support an unfinished school report. Or I might find a pen pal through a column that ran on the family page. The Monitor's universal scope, its rich offering of topics, and articles written in factual, unbiased, and encouraging vein were something we just couldn't find elsewhere.

We were being educated by our Monitor. Feature articles on far countries would arouse my longing to meet and know the people who lived there. This desire began to be fulfilled when I took part in an activity involving young Christian Scientists around the world. Our local group always found just the right background material in the Monitor to prepare us for the arrival of young Scientists who came from overseas as part of this activity and who brought with them the flavor of their homelands.
