Spiritual understanding gives us dominion

From the May 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Each of us is infinitely more than a spot of consciousness incarcerated in a material body, apparently at the mercy of matter. This illusion that man is physical and finite, which seems to bind mankind, results from ignorance of his real nature and from a misconception of what life really is. It would rob us of the freedom, joy, and dominion that are our right.

Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health: "When examined in the light of divine Science, mortals present more than is detected upon the surface, since inverted thoughts and erroneous beliefs must be counterfeits of Truth. Thought is borrowed from a higher source than matter, and by reversal, errors serve as waymarks to the one Mind, in which all error disappears in celestial Truth." Science and Health, p. 267.

That we need not yield to so-called material law can be illustrated by an experience I had many years ago. I was taking a short sea trip, accompanied by my younger son. The season was winter, the day bright and cold with a strong breeze, and as we left the harbor the sea was choppy. My son ran about the ship but before long came and leaned his head on my shoulder. Up to then I had been reading a Christian Science periodical, but now I looked around and could see that many of the passengers were unwell and the stewards were busy looking after them.
