Words cannot express the deep gratitude that I feel for Christian Science, which has restored spiritual healing to Christianity.
A number of years ago I had a healing that proved to me beyond doubt this eternal fact (Ps. 46: 1): "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." At the time I had been drafted into the United States Army. As is the case with all new soldiers, I was required to undergo basic combat training, a physically intense and highly structured activity. During the course of this training period, I woke early one morning feeling so weak that I could hardly move. After a compulsory medical examination, I was hurriedly moved into special quarters under medical quarantine. I was then told that I had contracted spinal meningitis.
The thought of this medical diagnosis was terribly frightening to me. I had never before been under any medical supervision but had always relied on Christian Science treatment for healing. Although I could appreciate the medical practitioners' motives in wanting to alleviate human suffering, I was amazed at how challenging this medical environment was to my efforts to quietly, prayerfully trust in God.
