Being

From the May 1984 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Being comes before doing. Without first being, no one could do anything because there would be no one to do the doing. What is being? I could take a look at my body and ask, Is that my being? In one sense it seems so, but it does not give satisfactory answers in a deeper, much more important sense. It does not tell me what my true being really is. Yet that word, "being," always seems to urge me to look farther; it suggests divine power and is full of a promise that the physical senses cannot comprehend.

Christian Science is all about the divine, omnipotent, omnipresent Being, which is God, and His creation, which reflects His being. To put it the Apostle Paul's often-quoted way, "In him we live, and move, and have our being."Acts 17:28. It is particularly interesting to note the many references to "being" throughout the Christian Science textbook. This book, Science and Health, is Mrs. Eddy's gift to a world growing tired of trying to fill the hole in its questioning heart with such things as isms, genes, wonder drugs, and electronic-age technology, none of which explains what being really is.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, as its full title implies, does not lead one away from the Bible, but back to it. It gives one the essential key to the Bible and so to being. In the very first paragraph of its Preface, Mrs. Eddy refers to "the guiding star of being" and points out, "The Wisemen were led to behold and to follow this daystar of divine Science, lighting the way to eternal harmony."Science and Health, p. vii. Worldly wisdom doesn't reveal this spiritual harmony, but from Genesis to Revelation the Bible's stately, vibrant message illuminates what being really is.
