Change the evidence and heal

From the December 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the allegorical trialSee Science and Health, pp. 430-442. set forth in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, explains the necessity of changing the venue, the place or setting of the trial, from the Court of Error to the Court of Spirit. Then the evidence of Spirit is presented in the proper perspective, and the victory is won on the side of Spirit. The patient is healed and set free. This shows that in the solving of our daily problems we must work from the right standpoint, the standpoint of Spirit.

It's impossible to understand Christian Science or to demonstrate it from the standpoint of mortal mind. It would be like asking a physical scientist to explain Jesus' walking on the water, or a medical doctor to explain Jesus' raising the dead. Such acts are impossible from the standpoint of matter or mortal mind. But from the higher point of view of Spirit, the allness of God and His harmonious government of the universe, the demonstration of Truth is both reasonable and understandable.

Evidence in a court of law is presented as argument pro and con. The arguments of sin, disease, and death are the negative evidence presented by mortal mind, the hypothetical suggestion of a death mind—a self-destructive mind. Here is where we need a change of venue. We must be willing to deny the so-called mind that presents such evidence, to turn away from the mesmerism of matter-based thought. In reality there is no mortal mind, and the evidence it is supposed to present is illusory, mesmeric, unreal. There is but one Mind, and that Mind is God, good. Man in God's likeness is spiritual. He represents the nature and power of God and expresses God's harmonious law. As the textbook explains: "Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind; nor can the material senses bear reliable testimony on the subject of health. The Science of Mind-healing shows it to be impossible for aught but Mind to testify truly or to exhibit the real status of man."Ibid., p. 120.
