But I do know the truth. Why am I not free?

From the December 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

How, indeed, could one study for hours and hours that holiest of all books, the Bible, and its companion, the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, without experiencing healing? Christ Jesus tells us, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."John 8:31, 32. Among Christians that statement is very familiar. It is quoted often, and many a person has found healing power in it. Why not immediately every time?

We can safely assume that Christ Jesus knew what he was talking about, for his very life proved his divine sonship. Being in perfect harmony with God, he could not and would not mislead or deceive his listeners. If healing does not quickly follow in every instance, it may be that Jesus' statement is being viewed as though all one needs in order to be freed from belief in sickness, domination, or sin is an intellectual knowing of some mystical or undefined truth.

A simplistic, literal interpretation of the Master's words, one that overlooks the deeper, more spiritual meaning, may be at the root of this misperception. Jesus expected his disciples (and that includes his present-day disciples, too) to see beyond the testimony of the material senses and to understand his life message.
