"The line of demarcation"—the saving grace of spiritual understanding

From the December 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In working out our salvation it's essential that we learn to distinguish clearly between what is good and what is evil, what is truth and what are lies. This is fundamental. Sin cannot be overcome unless we are awake to what the sin claims and are ready to yield to the Christ, Truth, which redeems us from sin.

Through conscientious prayer we perceive more of the substantiality of real good than is apparent to the physical senses. We come to understand and demonstrate more of the truth of man's being as the pure, sinless reflection of God. The falsehood of predestined mortality, of finite, corporeal manhood and womanhood, no longer deceives us. Our spiritual sense is showing us the truth, and we feel the saving grace of a Christly realization of divine reality. In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mrs. Eddy writes: "Spiritual sense is the discernment of spiritual good. Understanding is the line of demarcation between the real and unreal."Science and Health, p. 505.

In many of the lessons that Christ Jesus taught his disciples, he pointed to the need for clear spiritual discernment. He directed his followers to choose first and only the side of God, good, and to relinquish whatever would claim to stand in opposition to good. The Master's whole life and ministry offer the highest example of what pure spiritual understanding really means to our salvation.
