During previous Christmas seasons, in the United States, there has been much controversy about whether it is appropriate to display religious symbols of Christmas on public property. But many people can agree on one vital point: Christmas touches our deepest feelings. We need Christmas.
As the enduring reminder of Christ Jesus' holy birth and life, Christmas enters too deeply into our hearts and lives to be pushed aside. Christmas is far more than a holiday. It is God's message to us, showing us the joy and peace of man's wholly spiritual nature and identity. We cannot afford to be without the spirit of Christ and all that Christmas means to mankind's spiritual progress, whether or not we choose to mark the holiday with decorations or special gatherings. We cannot really make progress without a little more Christmas entering into our hearts each day of every year.
More Christmas touches our lives whenever we prove in some degree man's spiritual nature as the likeness of God. We are commemorating Jesus' birth in a way that indicates we value his life—and all that his sacrifice means to our redemption and eventual triumph over the claims that matter is the source of life.
