Daily proofs of the power of God make me so grateful for the teachings of Christian Science.
A few years ago while vacationing in Hawaii, I was out with my children in the ocean, on a foam surfboard, when a very large wave developed. In the brief moment I had to decide what to do, I chose to ride the wave in. But the suction of the wave had pulled all the water off the sand, so when the wave broke, I crashed onto the sand—nose first. I heard a crack but was able to surface smiling. My children had seen me pushed over by the wave and asked if I was all right; I assured them that I was. Then I noticed that my nose was bleeding, so I left the water. (The family was aware only of this aspect of the problem.)
I spent my "beach time" in prayer, affirming my ever-present, unbreakable at-one-ment with God as His spiritual idea. I denied that there was a power that could separate me from God, good, and I refused to condemn myself for any "wrong decision." Also I denied that pain is any part of God's man.
