Being true Christians: the real church work!

From the February 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What is the real church work? Are we bringing the light of Christ to our community?

So often we get involved with the routine procedures of church committees and meetings, which are necessary to the workings of a church, but we neglect the true work of the Church. Christian caring and sharing, which promote healing for each other and the community, are really our true church work.

One summer I was helping as a gardener for our branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and I was there almost every other day. Often a neighborhood boy would come by on his bicycle, and one day he stopped and said, "Excuse me; do you live here?" After a good chuckle, I realized that my heart and soul would only be alive in church as I learned to give love back to mankind. I should always have a church-filled heart, one full of Christian humanity and Christian love. Church should be an experiencing of the Christ, not just a matter of hearing words and attending services. Only in this way can we embrace the community with tender Christian love.
