Coming through trying times

From the February 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

After he has taken a strong stand for Truth or reached new heights in his understanding of God and man, a student of Christian Science sometimes finds himself being shaken spiritually. This phenomenon should not dismay him, however. It is actually a time to grow in spiritual strength and to "prove all things; hold fast that which is good,"Thess. 5:21 .as Paul counsels us to do in the New Testament.

Mortal mind would dignify this phenomenon with the title of law, labeling it "the law of reaction or reversal." It would attempt to shake one's faith in God, good. But being the opposite of God's law, contrary to His rule of continuous, harmonious action, it can have no real impact on one's experience when evil's powerlessness is recognized.

In Christian Science, which is the law of God, divine Mind, all facts and rules are subject to proof. For you and me to have a part in proving God's ever-presence and power—even in one demonstration—is a holy experience. It is something we do not want to miss—not even when we seem to encounter resistance, uncertainty, or discouragement. Learning to look on trying times in this light mitigates their formidable aspects and enables us to view them as opportunities to verify God's all-power.
