An attractive issue of a weekly magazine appeared this last February. Its contents were devoted to helping readers find a sounder understanding of family. Several of the articles explained the spiritual resources available through prayer to help any family group. Other contributions discussed the deepening spiritual love and trust that can bring the whole human family more closely together.
The cover presented four color photographs, depicting parents and children. The simple words "The whole family," were surrounded on three sides by the photographs. At the top of the cover was the title of the publication, Christian Science Sentinel. One felt invited by the human tenderness of these pictures to turn the cover and to get right into the contents. And that of course is just exactly what the artists who design each issue of the Sentinel want readers to do. They know that what a reader sees in a periodical has a definite impact on how readily he will receive its message.
Mrs. Eddy felt this way, and she advised the Editors of the periodicals that the cover of the Sentinel should be as appealing as the content is helpful. Archival material also shows that she made recommendations regarding design of the periodicals that were based on her appreciation of other publications of her day. Mrs. Eddy clearly wanted the visual tone of the periodicals to be beautifully up to date.
