Being a law to ourselves

From the May 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What does it mean to be a law to oneself? The writer of Proverbs observes of a man, "As he thinketh in his heart, so is he."Prov. 23:7. Whatever we accept into our thinking as being true or valid acts as a law determining the quality of our experience. That's why it is vitally important to our health, happiness, and progress that our thinking be governed by divine Truth, by the spiritual facts of being instead of by material opinions. False, educated beliefs can't act as a law to us when we understand the higher laws of God and are obedient to them.

Christ Jesus never allowed the materialistic beliefs and practices of his time to be a law to him. His healings of human ills and his dominion over matter, sin, and death proved that the understanding of Truth and Love annuls so-called material laws of every kind.

The jealousy and malice that Jesus' healing ministry aroused would have totally obstructed his mission. But evil could not destroy him or stop his actions, because he was always a law to himself. Through ceaseless prayer Jesus cherished his divinely sustained unity with God, the only Mind of man. This oneness with the source of all true intelligence and action enabled him to nullify every obstructive suggestion of evil.
