Your pastor and you

From the May 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A woman and her husband arrived early at a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. He was to usher that Sunday morning and had things to do to prepare for the service. His wife was a new student of Christian Science, not yet a member. And though she loved this Science, she was still learning about the organizational aspects of the church.

Another woman had also arrived early that morning. She was the wife of the substitute soloist and a member of another denomination. As the two women chatted before the service, the visitor showed little interest in Christian Science. She was full of recent developments at her own church. The new minister was not to her liking. She was critical, especially of his personality and lack of appeal to the young.

The usher's wife listened to all of this. Formerly she might have sympathized; instead, to her surprise, she heard herself explaining something she had not really understood until then. Realizing that only God's Word can satisfy everyone's needs, she now saw and shared with the visitor the revolutionary approach to church sermons and church ministry Mrs. Eddy had made by ordaining the Bible and her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures as the pastor of her Church.
