"Why am I doing this?"

From the May 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sometimes when you are going about your daily activity, do you catch yourself wondering "Why am I doing this?" That question can arise even when we're busy with the very legitimate responsibilities of breadwinning or homemaking.

At times, human obligations seem to weigh heavily, even make us feel we're boxed in by a situation we'd rather be free to leave. But a clear sense of true purpose, a motive spiritually understood, lifts this burdened sense and helps us resolve the situation harmoniously.

Christ Jesus gives us the highest example of what a spiritually motivated life can be. His purpose was clear, as he taught and demonstrated God's power and proved the impotence of evil. The Saviour showed that doing God's will is the only way to freedom and joy, even when this path seems rough and challenging. He taught his followers the practical, healing effects of being selfless rather than selfish, of being spiritually-minded rather than materially-minded.
