Chance: fact of life or subtle deception?

From the May 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

•One evening a man was crossing a street at a dark intersection. Halfway across the street he felt impelled to stop immediately and did so. An instant later, with no warning sounds, someone on a bicycle speeded by directly in front of him, right where his next step would have led.

•An employee of a large firm was being considered for a position for which he felt fully qualified. After considerable thought and prayer on his part, it came to him forcefully that the position was not right for him, and he withdrew his name from consideration. Within a few months a more challenging and professionally rewarding opportunity developed in a newly created department, and he was asked to accept the position.

•Two girls from a youth organization knocked on the door of a suburban house. They asked the man who answered to buy a chance in a raffle that their organization was holding to raise money for its activities. He thought for a moment, thanked them for offering, refused the raffle ticket, and (to their puzzlement) gave them a small contribution.
