From the October 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What a great blessing it is that in founding Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy made provision for our daily study of the Bible together with her book Science and Health. To me, study of the Bible Lesson is symbolic of the manna which of old nourished, refreshed, and strengthened the children of Israel in the wilderness. Sometimes a certain spiritual truth has a particularly strong appeal; it stays with me through the days and becomes more meaningful as I ponder it.

This happened to me one week when the Bible Lesson on "Life" included these words of Christ Jesus (John 8:12): "He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." The light of life—what a wonderful promise! It applies to all whose heart's desire is to follow Jesus' precepts in word and deed. Shortly thereafter, this glorious realization came forcefully to my aid.

One Sunday evening my granddaughter had come to spend the night with me. She always enjoyed it very much when the two of us, lying in our beds placed side by side, would chat until our eyes fell shut. This time it didn't take long at all. I was soon fast asleep, but I was wakened suddenly by a sharp pain that went through my body. I felt swelling above my left eye and under my left collarbone. I was also unable to move my left arm.
