The kind of gratitude that brings healing

Look with me for a few moments at two dimensions of gratitude. On one hand, there's gratitude given for, and on the other, gratitude given to. One dimension focuses on the gift, the other on the giver.

Let me illustrate:

Scene 1. You have just handed a colorfully wrapped gift to a friend. He accepts it with incredulity. "What's this?" he cries. You watch his face as he opens the parcel, and you share in his delighted surprise. This is gratitude given for
