Unconventional Christmas

From the December 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christmas shouldn't feel like a burden; it's really all about the lifting of weight and darkness. It's about light.

It's about a star leading, skies singing, and the Saviour coming— not just a beautiful story but a true story. And not just a story but the great reality of being beginning to be seen.

A burdened sense in regard to Christmas comes sometimes because of conventional misconceptions. Perhaps we catch sight of something wonderful, something innocent, pure, and good which we associate with Christmas. But then we make the mistake of thinking this is the outcome of a combination of human circumstances—a particular location, for example, certain people present, and certain others not present! We may be worrying about some level of affluence we are trying to attain in order to feel free about giving gifts, to feel free about "having Christmas."
