Mary's song

From the December 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Glory shines
and a voice speaks:
"Blessed among women. Fear not!"
I bow my head.
Why me to bear the burden of this gift
promised of ages?
A great joy!
In secrecy the gift is given
buds, blooms, until
the fullness of the time is come
(with Joseph's cherishing).

In quietude
the child is born.

Eyes blinking at the light
small hands unfolding like a flower
what will you grasp?
and tiny feet—where tread?

Child, you were never wholly mine
your vision seared me;
why could you not keep it in your heart?
But no, it must be shared.
I see
each one who comes into the world
bears his own Calvary.

Daybreak unsullied wide
a sudden light.
Ah, now it's plain
cryptics uncoded
dark sayings bright
God's plan comes clear.

In radiancy of resurrection
divine Love embraces all.
