Bible Notes

Related to the Lesson-Sermons for August 1988

From the July 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Each Lesson-Sermon published in the Christian Science Quarterly—Bible Lessons is designed to be complete in itself. Its Bible references (King James Version) are corroborated and explained by passages from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These Bible Notes are offered by The Christian Science Journal as indications of the possibilities for individual research.

Ye are my witnesses, salth the Lord (Isa. 43:10)

This is a major theme for this prophet. As beneficiaries of God's marvelous deliverance from Egypt, from famine, pestilence, war, and so forth, the people of Israel were qualified to bear witness to the presence, power, and nature of God. In the tradition of Old Testament (OT) justice, there was an obligation to testify to known facts (see Lev. 5:1), and therefore this statement is also a charge to perform the required service.
