I heard a stirring concert long ago given by Duke Ellington and his great band. His theme consisted of the first four words of the Bible: "In the beginning God . . ." The music, which maintained a rich and triumphant tone throughout, has remained in my memory—and the healing power of the theme, when this theme is studied in the light of Christian Science, continues to unfold to me.
The full statement "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth"Gen. 1:1. is explained in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. She writes as follows: "The infinite has no beginning. This word beginning is employed to signify the only,—that is, the eternal verity and unity of God and man, including the universe."Science and Health, p. 502. This brings to thought the grand conclusion of the prayer given to us by the master Christian, Christ Jesus: "For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever"Matt. 6:13. and its spiritual interpretation according to Science and Health: "For God is infinite, all-power, all Life, Truth, Love, overall, and All."Science and Health, p. 17.
But how can you and I use the fact of God's allness and power to heal and redeem people as Jesus did? How can it enable us to overcome the wrong habits and muddied thinking that so often prevent us from succeeding in our businesses and homelife, from being happy, staying well, and progressing spiritually?
