Parents and grandparents naturally want to know how to help their children learn about Christian Science so that regardless of the challenges that come, their children's roots will be strong and firmly grounded.
First, we can provide examples. Parents have the ultimate responsibility for educating the young, and a parent's example is basic. In my own case I learned from my mother and grandmother, who daily read the Lesson-Sermon from the Bible and Science and Health Found in the Christian Science Quarterly. by Mrs. Eddy. I saw this study as providing a foundation for the harmony I felt in the home, as well as for the healings that occurred.
As I look back, I cannot remember a time when I did not have and love my own books. I became familiar with the ninety-first Psalm, which my Sunday School teacher encouraged our class to memorize. We also learned what the books of the Bible are, a good preparation for reading the Lesson-Sermon on our own. The children in our home were strongly encouraged to read the lesson every day. This thoughtful, loving, but specific requirement enabled me to gain my own spiritual strength on a regular basis. Indeed, the inspiration and knowledge that unfolded to me from this reading prevented me more than once from getting myself out on a limb as well as providing me with timely answers for the concerns of each day. I have since come to realize the truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement "Of this also rest assured, that books and teaching are but a ladder let down from the heaven of Truth and Love, upon which angelic thoughts ascend and descend, bearing on their pinions of light the Christ-spirit."
