Each Lesson-Sermon published in the Christian Science Quarterly—Bible Lessons is designed to be complete in itself. Its Bible references (King James Version) are corroborated and explained by passages from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These Bible Notes are offered by The Christian Science Journal as indications of the possibilities for individual research.

But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the Lord (Isa. 7:12) Ahaz became king of Judah about 735 B.C., when he was only twenty years old. He rejected the God of his fathers and worshiped idols. His apostasy explains his reluctance to ask God for a sign when confronted with a grave political crisis, the attempted siege of Jerusalem by enemy invaders. When Isaiah exhorted him to turn to God for help, he refused, choosing instead to seek foreign aid. Hosea, Micah, and Isaiah all prophesied during his twenty-year reign.
