Recently one of our staff members called a contributor about an article we wanted her to work on a little further. He mentioned several points that could be clarified, then wondered if his comments might inadvertently discourage the writer! So he began reiterating the real strength of the manuscript. The writer indicated that the editor's comments had actually been helpful and enabling not discouraging, then added, "Don't worry—you couldn't stop me from writing."
Not long afterward, the revised article arrived, greatly strengthened and ready for publication. As we read the article, it was clear that the author hadn't suddenly developed new skillfulness in writing. Instead what had come forth sprang from her spiritual determination not to let anything sidetrack her from fulfilling her part in the history of Mrs. Eddy's periodicals.
Different jobs give perspective on different things. There are two things that the editors' job gives an "inside" perspective on that may be useful to share with the periodicals' deeply cherished contributors.
