LEARNING ABOUT CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

Getting acquainted with God, the great Physician

From the August 1991 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Job's words in the Old Testament "O that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!... He would put strength in me"  Job 23:3, 6. may express what many feel today. Humanity, weary of its recurring wars, new plagues, and violent evil, reaches out to a source beyond itself for comfort and healing.

For many people, God seems remote and unrelated to human life, sometimes little more than a shoulder to cry on in times of need. For others, even those who come from a religious background, there often remain perplexing questions about the nature of God and His relevance in people's everyday lives.

For example, my mother started to train as a doctor, in order to become a medical missionary. Her chosen career was rooted in a love of God and a desire to help alleviate the sufferings of humanity. Having been brought up in the Protestant tradition, she was familiar with the Scriptural promises of God's loving care for His children.
