My father's cousin was one of the first Christian Science practitioners in Melbourne. I have known of Christian Science for most of my life, having heard it mentioned and discussed at various times in our family. However, I did not take an active interest in it until I met my husband-to-be. His family also knew of Christian Science, some already being members of the Church.
Around this time I became seriously ill. My parents called in a local doctor, who diagnosed my condition as appendicitis. He felt that an immediate operation was needed. At my request, my future sister-in-law arranged for me to have treatment from a Christian Science practitioner. She also immediately called in a Christian Science nurse to care for me in our home.
At the end of a week the doctor acknowledged that there was no longer any need for the operation and that I was in good health again. Although I didn't understand how the prayer had healed me, I was so grateful that I continued to explore Christian Science and to go to church regularly. Subsequently I became a member of The Mother Church.
