These days people can hardly avoid being familiar with theories about the physiological cause and treatment of diseases. Television, magazines, and most daily papers all devote significant attention to health issues.
Before looking into Christian Science, I had always accepted such information at face value. At the time I started studying Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, my fear of harmful physical conditions and causes made it challenging, at first, for me to think freely about spiritual healing. In spite of this I began to experience healings as I specifically applied to health and other kinds of problems the spiritual understanding I was gaining. Through the study of Christian Science I was gradually coming to understand God as divine Mind and infinite Love—as All-in-all, the substance and intelligence of the universe. I was beginning to view man as the very image and likeness of Mind and Love, as God's spiritual idea—not as a physical, mortal being. As I continued to reason with this new understanding of my identity, the fear of disease lessened. I became interested in the idea that Christian healing could be practical and scientific and not just an unexplainable phenomenon or wishful thinking.
Science and Health was introducing to me the spiritual fact that the law that governs everyone's true being is the law of divine Mind, not some inescapable law of matter or biology. I was learning that the harmony and unopposability of Mind's law can be proved in a step-by-step way, with healing results.
