Responsibility without burden

From the March 1992 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Have you ever wanted to escape to a mountain cabin and feel the freedom of total release from responsibilities? Vacations may provide a temporary relief, but before long we are back to those duties that sometimes seem to weigh us down.

A misunderstanding of the relationship of God and man often underlies a sense of burden. As long as we think of ourselves as mortals, separated from God, it may seem difficult to rise above the weight of responsibilities. But the burden can begin to lift as we open our thought to the Biblical truth that God made man in His image. As image, man is the reflection of God, His expression, the manifestation of divine Spirit. The real man, therefore, our true identity, lives in God, is wholly spiritual, and is governed by God in every aspect of his being. He is wholly dependent on God for his life, substance, and intelligence. He has no personal abilities but reflects the creator's infinite ability. Furthermore, since God is unchanging, the ability of His idea, man, never varies. It doesn't lapse on occasion but is always at the point of perfection.

How can this spiritual view of man's relationship to God release us from burden? Turning from the false view of ourselves and acknowledging through prayer our spiritual identity help to destroy the mistaken sense of separation from God that carries with it a feeling of burden and fear. When we begin to see ourselves and others as reflecting God, we lean more on Him as the only genuine cause and feel a growing freedom from the weight of false responsibility.
