Of lions, bears, and Goliath

From the May 1992 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A friend of mine was talking with me about Christian Science. While she had experienced healing for herself through prayer, she still had a number of questions about caring for children in this way. The words "What if . . ."came up several times. There were certain areas in her life where she felt confident about trusting God's care, having seen the beneficial effects of prayer. But she hesitated when thinking about relying upon her developing spiritual trust and understanding when it came to all of her family's needs.

"What if . . ." questions certainly are not exclusive to my friend. None of us has come up against every problem there seems to be in human experience. But once we have had a healing in Christian Science, or even witnessed or heard of one, there is a natural desire to prove more of the scientific healing power of Science and to trust ourselves more to God's care in facing all of life's challenges.

Speaking of the Science of Christ, Mrs. Eddy asks, "Should we adopt the 'simple addition' in Christian Science and doubt its higher rules, or despair of ultimately reaching them, even though failing at first to demonstrate all the possibilities of Christianity?" Miscellaneous Writings, p. 30.
