At the beginning of 1991 I suddenly had pain in the kidneys and the symptoms of kidney stones. I was unable to perform my household duties and had to stay in bed. A Christian Science practitioner prayed for me and gave me wonderful guidance in spiritualizing my thinking. Endeavoring to think purer thoughts, I felt impelled to look up passages on baptism in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy I read, "The baptism of Spirit, washing the body of all the impurities of flesh, signifies that the pure in heart see God and are approaching spiritual Life and its demonstration" (p. 241).
Through this study many an impurity was uncovered in my thinking. These impurities needed to be eliminated. I endeavored to remove evil, worry, and even petty annoyance from my consciousness and to fill it with thoughts of God, divine Love. Slowly the pain abated and I was again able to eat, after having been unable to retain anything for some time.
Near the end of the week I felt so much better that I was able to go with my daughter to a music recital, where I accompanied young violinists on the piano.
