Have you given a cup of cold water lately?

From the October 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

If you were in a hot and arid desert, wouldn't you love to have a cup of cold water to quench your thirst? Material existence, the false belief of life in matter with its fear, sickness, despair, may be likened to a desert.

Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health: "Millions of unprejudiced minds—simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert—are waiting and watching for rest and drink. Give them a cup of cold water in Christ's name, and never fear the consequences." Science and Health, p. 570. The scientific, spiritual truth of one perfect God and His perfect, spiritual man is the cup of cold water Christian Scientists can offer to the world today. The Science of being reveals God as infinite good, Spirit, Mind, Principle, Love. Man is understood to be God's beloved child, or spiritual idea, in truth forever fearless, diseaseless, sinless. He is not an inharmonious, material mortal—the counterfeit of God's man.

We can pray daily for God-provided opportunities to do some giving of this renewing, strengthening—literally saving —truth. God, divine Love, does lead us to receptive individuals when we pray humbly with a sincere, heartfelt desire to help our fellowman. Our prayers also need to affirm that the living Christ—the true idea of God—can and does penetrate unproductive, materialistic thinking.
